Sex: Male Birth: Sep 18, 1871, South Dakota or Billings, Montana Death: May 17, 1936, Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois Burial: May 19, 1936, Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois Father: ____, Black Bear (b. Montana, Nebraska or Wyoming, d. 1880) Mother: ____, Cow Goes First (b. 1839 Nebraska) Married Beck, Anna M (b. 1873 Holstein, Germany, d. 1955 Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois) July 1893, Rock Island, IllinoisNotes for Zella Eagle Eye NOTE: Although Zella's marriage record with Anna Beck indicates his father was Black Bear and mother was White Blanket, since his known brother Edward was listed in the Indian Census Rolls at Pine Ridge as the brother of Playing with Wood who, in turn, is listed as a sister of Paul Black Bear, and Paul Black Bear was listed as the son of Cow Goes First when she was living with her second husband, White Blanket in the 1894 census, we are deducing that, in fact, Zella's parents were Black Bear and Cow Goes First, Cow Goes First indicates in the 1900 Federal Census that she was married to White Blanket about 1878, which is after Zella and all her other children were born except for Harry, the only child she apparently had whose father was White Blanket.BIRTH NOTE: Where actually born is hard to be sure, the tribe had to keep moving but it was Montana Territory Some records also show him being born on Pine Ridge Reservation, that is not true. The family was forced to move there when he was a child, so he may have grown up there, but was not born there.DEATH NOTE: Death Indexes erroneously show Zella passing away in 1935. That is wrong. We have a copy of his death certificate. He died from Tuberculosis in 1936. Email us if you would like a copy.

"Fool the Bear" was born four years before "Fooling Bear" and is on the list of those killed at Wounded Knee.
Also, family tradition has it that the only reason that Edward Black Bear and his brother Zella Eagle Eye were not among those killed at Wounded Knee is because they were attending school at Carlisle and not at home at that time. Carlisle was a boarding school in Pennsylvania.BIRTH NOTE: Indian Census has age in 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1901 and 1902NOTE: See Details for Fooling Bear, "United States Census, 1900" - FamilySearch.org https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MST6-57G

Although we have not found records for Black Bear (born 1853) specifically stating that his parents were Black Bear and Cow Goes First, we are deducing that they are his parents based on his being listed as a brother of Paul Black Bear in the 1890 and 1892 census rolls. We have evidence that Paul was their son as Paul was listed as Cow Goes First's son in the 1894 census, when she was living with her second husband White Blanket.NOTE: Click on links below for census transcriptions including this person

Assuming this is the same woman despite the age and name changes, as the 1900 and 1910 Federal censuses are very clear about her being married to Black Bear since 1878 or so.
Her age also drops 9 years from the 1892 to 1893 censuses, but her name remains the same.
NOTE: Black Bear is her 2d husband, per 1910 Federal Census, and she had had 4 children, 2 surviving. Per 1900 Federal Census, 3 children, 2 surviving, so another child probably born/died after 1900 census, or she counted wrong in 1900.NOTE: Click on links below for census transcriptions including this person

And, more information has surfaced. Belle was the daughter of Black Bear and Her Horse. Her Horse may have descended from Iron Whip, and later took the name Julia while married to Charles Yankton. But it is strange that we have not found her in earlier census rolls. But there is a Red Nest born about 1863 in other records, possibly the same man, possibly not. However, since only finding one census record per year for a Red Nest, and it looks like the same children, figuring it is same man.
Not finding Red Nest in the 1887 or 1888 census rolls, wife and child listed without him. Then he is listed with children and no wife from 1892 through 1899.
Although we have not found records for Red Nest specifically stating that his parents were Black Bear and Cow Goes First, we are deducing that they are his parents based on his being listed as a brother of Herman Black Bear in the 1892 census roll, for whom we have evidence he was their son as he was listed as Cow Goes First's son in several censuses, when she was living with her second husband White Blanket. Furthermore, family history passed down to Zella Eagle Eye's family is that Zella had a brother named Red Nest.NOTE: Click on links below for census transcriptions including this person

Then her age jumps up by 6 years in the 1886 census, making her born 1880. Listing her as born about 1883 as it is not clear which set of census rolls is in error. But birth is Aug 1882 in 1900 census.BIRTH NOTE: According to the 1890-1894 census rolls, she is the daughter of Paul Black Bear's brother. Then in 1895-1899, she is listed as daughter of Paul Black Bear himself in a separate household. They both indicate an April birth date in the 1900 Federal census but one gives 1878, the other 1880. all other records when they were living together with parents show them to be the very same age with each other.BIRTH NOTE: 1900 federal census indicates birth April 1880, sister Alice indicates April 1878.DEATH NOTE: Nancy is on the 1903 census roll and not on 1904 or later census rolls with husband William Black Bear.NOTE: Click on links below for census transcriptions including this person

William is relatively consistently shown as born about 1880, and Loves his Life is listed as born about 1882 in the 1890 census. However, while Holy Talk and Kitty Black Bear may be one person, according to the census rolls, Holy Talk was born 2 years before Kitty, so leaving separate entries for them as they could be sisters. What does support theory that they were one child, is the that we only find Holy Talk in census rolls for 1886 thru 1890, and do not start finding Kitty in the census rolls until 1892.NOTE: Click on links below for census transcriptions including this person
