Eagle Eye Family Genealogy

Eagle Eye, Zella

Sex: Male
Birth: Sep 18, 1871, South Dakota or Billings, Montana
Death: May 17, 1936, Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois
Burial: May 19, 1936, Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois

Father: ____, Black Bear (b. Montana, Nebraska or Wyoming, d. 1880)
Mother: ____, Cow Goes First (b. 1839 Nebraska)

Married Beck, Anna M (b. 1873 Holstein, Germany, d. 1955 Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois)
           July 1893, Rock Island, Illinois

Notes for Zella Eagle Eye
NOTE: Although Zella's marriage record with Anna Beck indicates his father was Black Bear and mother was White Blanket, since his known brother Edward was listed in the Indian Census Rolls at Pine Ridge as the brother of Playing with Wood who, in turn, is listed as a sister of Paul Black Bear, and Paul Black Bear was listed as the son of Cow Goes First when she was living with her second husband, White Blanket in the 1894 census, we are deducing that, in fact, Zella's parents were Black Bear and Cow Goes First, Cow Goes First indicates in the 1900 Federal Census that she was married to White Blanket about 1878, which is after Zella and all her other children were born except for Harry, the only child she apparently had whose father was White Blanket.
BIRTH NOTE: Where actually born is hard to be sure, the tribe had to keep moving but it was Montana Territory Some records also show him being born on Pine Ridge Reservation, that is not true. The family was forced to move there when he was a child, so he may have grown up there, but was not born there.
DEATH NOTE: Death Indexes erroneously show Zella passing away in 1935. That is wrong. We have a copy of his death certificate. He died from Tuberculosis in 1936. Email us if you would like a copy.

Notes for Edward Black Bear
NOTE: The "Fool the Bear" who was killed at Wounded Knee is not to be confused with our "Fooling Bear", whose name later became Edward Black Bear. "Fool the Bear" was born four years before "Fooling Bear" and is on the list of those killed at Wounded Knee.
Also, family tradition has it that the only reason that Edward Black Bear and his brother Zella Eagle Eye were not among those killed at Wounded Knee is because they were attending school at Carlisle and not at home at that time. Carlisle was a boarding school in Pennsylvania.

           about 1878
Children:
    1. Black Bear, William (b. 1880 South Dakota)
    2. Black Bear, Rebecca (b. 1883 South Dakota)

Notes for Black Bear
BIRTH NOTE: Indian Census has age in 1886, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1902
NOTE: Her Good Horse is his 4th wife per 1910 Federal Census.
Although we have not found records for Black Bear (born 1853) specifically stating that his parents were Black Bear and Cow Goes First, we are deducing that they are his parents based on his being listed as a brother of Paul Black Bear in the 1890 and 1892 census rolls. We have evidence that Paul was their son as Paul was listed as Cow Goes First's son in the 1894 census, when she was living with her second husband White Blanket.

Other Names or Aliases:

Married ____, Black Bear (b. 1853 Nebraska)
           about 1878
Children:
    1. Black Bear, William (b. 1880 South Dakota)
    2. Black Bear, Rebecca (b. 1883 South Dakota)

Notes for Owns Good Horses
BIRTH NOTE: Indian Census has age in 1886, 1887, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1902
BIRTH NOTE: Her age decreased in 1910 Federal Census, to being born about 1865, but ignoring that as it is inconsistent with the other records we have for her. Assuming this is the same woman despite the age and name changes, as the 1900 and 1910 Federal censuses are very clear about her being married to Black Bear since 1878 or so.
Her age also drops 9 years from the 1892 to 1893 censuses, but her name remains the same.
NOTE: Black Bear is her 2d husband, per 1910 Federal Census, and she had had 4 children, 2 surviving. Per 1900 Federal Census, 3 children, 2 surviving, so another child probably born/died after 1900 census, or she counted wrong in 1900.

Notes for Belle Black Bear
BIRTH NOTE: Age is on yearly Indian Census rolls we found for her for 1892 through 1902
NOTE: We thought that Belle must be the daughter of an earlier wife of Black Bear, since she was born before Black Bear married "Has Good Horses." And, more information has surfaced. Belle was the daughter of Black Bear and Her Horse. Her Horse may have descended from Iron Whip, and later took the name Julia while married to Charles Yankton. But it is strange that we have not found her in earlier census rolls. Research is in process for Belle's part of the family, write for more information.

Red Nest,

Sex: Male
Birth: about 1860, Montana or Nebraska
Death: 16 December 1931, Pine Ridge Reservation, Bennett, South Dakota

Father: ____, Black Bear (b. Montana, Nebraska or Wyoming, d. 1880)
Mother: ____, Cow Goes First (b. 1839 Nebraska)

Married(1) ____, Neck (b. 1866 Nebraska)

Children:
    1. Red Nest, Fred (b. 1885 South Dakota, d. 1929 Bennett County, South Dakota)
    2. Red Nest, Fannie (b. 1892 South Dakota)

Married(2) ____, Helen (b. 1878)
about 1901, Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
Children:
    1. Red Nest, Victoria (b. 1902 Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota)

Notes for Red Nest
BIRTH NOTE: Indian Census has age in 1886, 1890, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1902
BIRTH NOTE: Indian census rolls indicate birth about 1860, 1900 Federal Census indicates June 1863
NOTE: He is on the same page in the 1892 census roll at Pine Ridge as Fooling Bear and the Black Bears. But there is a Red Nest born about 1863 in other records, possibly the same man, possibly not. However, since only finding one census record per year for a Red Nest, and it looks like the same children, figuring it is same man.
Not finding Red Nest in the 1887 or 1888 census rolls, wife and child listed without him. Then he is listed with children and no wife from 1892 through 1899.
Although we have not found records for Red Nest specifically stating that his parents were Black Bear and Cow Goes First, we are deducing that they are his parents based on his being listed as a brother of Herman Black Bear in the 1892 census roll, for whom we have evidence he was their son as he was listed as Cow Goes First's son in several censuses, when she was living with her second husband White Blanket. Furthermore, family history passed down to Zella Eagle Eye's family is that Zella had a brother named Red Nest.

NOTE: Alice and Nancy appear to be twins, or born the same year, so it is hard to be positive which other English and Lakota names belong to which of them, but am assigning the names based on their consistent positions in the family listings. They both indicate an April birth date in the 1900 Federal census but one gives 1878, the other 1880. all other records when they were living together with parents show them to be the very same age with each other.

BIRTH NOTE: 1900 Federal Census indicates birth Aug 1881, several Indian Rolls indicate 1880
NOTE: Facts proving Harry is White Blanket's son and not the son of Black Bear, despite his taking Black Bear as his surname:
1. 1892 census roll: Katie is listed as step-daughter, Harry as just son. If he was also a step-son, that would have been indicated on that roll.
2. 1900 Federal Census: his parents were married 21 years, he was 18 years old and living in the same household.

Notes for Cow Goes First
NAME NOTE: Name on census rolls from 1893 through 1899 and possibly later was Cow Goes First
BIRTH NOTE: Indian Census has age in 1886, 1887, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1901 and 1902
BIRTH NOTE: 1900 census indicates birth date of May 1843, but she was older than that according to the Census rolls for 1886 through 1899.
NOTE: Merging records for Medicine Talker, First Cow, Leading Buffalo and Cow Goes First since the 1900 Federal Census indicates that Cow Goes First and White Blanket had been married 21 years as of 1900. There is minor variation in ages in the census rolls, but her having the name Medicine Talker in the 1886 census was a concern. Assuming that the 1900 census is correct, then she must have gone by all of these names.

NOTE: Was unsure whether William and Loves his Life (Niyanfre) were the same child, due to the age discrepancy. William is relatively consistently shown as born about 1880, and Loves his Life is listed as born about 1882 in the 1890 census. However, since his mother in the 1900 census indicated she only had 3 children, not more, have merged the records.

Mother: ____, Cow Goes First (b. 1839 Nebraska)

Notes for Holy Talk
BIRTH NOTE: Age is on Indian Census rolls for 1886, 1887, 1888 and 1890
NOTE: Due to her age, it looks like Holy Talk and Smoky woman are the same child. However, while Holy Talk and Kitty Black Bear may be one person, according to the census rolls, Holy Talk was born 2 years before Kitty, so leaving separate entries for them as they could be sisters. What does support theory that they were one child, is the that we only find Holy Talk in census rolls for 1886 thru 1890, and do not start finding Kitty in the census rolls until 1892.

This family tree is a replacement for our Oglala Family: Black Bear, Eagle Eye, Red Nest Family Tree at Rootsweb's WorldConnect project, which was at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=eagle-eye, and has now been moved to http://blackbear.tribalpages.com.

Although it does not include our census transcriptions, the TribalPages version of our tree has all the people who were in the original Rootsweb Worldconnect tree, and has many graphical views and features, and includes sources as well as ahnentafel, pedigree and descendant reports for those people who were in the original tree.

The URL for that feature-rich version of our tree is http://blackbear.tribalpages.com.
