BIRTH NOTE: Her age varies by a decade, between the records from 1887-1890, when she was with her parents and Bad Hair, showing a birth of 1860, and the records for 1886, and from 1892 onwards, when she was no longer with Bad Hair, all of which show a birth of 1870.

NOTE: It is possible that Pipe, Pipe Woman, Walks with Pipe, and Mary are different women, especially given the jump in reported ages. However, we can be fairly sure that Mary's father was an Eagle Elk, from her husband's file at Carlisle, to be found at http://carlisleindian.dickinson.edu/student_files/alexander-yellow-wolf-student-file and that Pipe, Pipe Woman, Walks with Pipe and Mary are the same woman, from looking at the children and their mother as shown in the census rolls. While it is possible that Pipe was an older sister of Pipe Woman aka Walks with Pipe, it seems more likely that the age claimed by her simply changed, or the age reported from 1887-1890 was a clerical error by the officials that got copied from roll to roll.

BIRTH NOTE: some censuses say born South Dakota, but most say Nebraska, and her stated ages are so variable it is impossible to be sure when she was actually born. However, there is a consistency that makes me wonder whether Julia and Her Horse were one or two women. All the records for Her Horse, which are 1887, 1888 and 1890, show a birth of about 1851. Then in 1892 Charles wife is Julia born about 1858-1860. The only data supporting idea that Her Horse and Julia are one and the same woman, are the stated length of her marriage to Charles in the 1900 and 1910 Federal censuses which are 20 years as of 1900 and 30 years in 1910.

NOTE: first marriage was to Black Bear, second marriage, in about 1880, was to Charles Yankton, whose Lakota name was Kills Enemy through 1890

Some years he is listed both alone as a head of household as well as with his mother or wife the same year (i.e., enumerated twice). It is not clear whether he and Walks with Pipe were separated some of the time or these are just errors when the censuses were taken, although the 1900 Federal census shows him Divorced and alone.
